Introduction
Born 1976, Jeffrey Adam Gutt is a musician and vocalist originating from Detroit. He was a member of Dry Cell, on and off, from 2000 to 2009 as the band's main vocalist. He rejoined Dry Cell in 2005 replacing vocalist Dave Wasierski who had left the band after a brief period as main vocalist. He performed with Dry Cell, Acrylic, BWNN & Punch during his music career. Of these bands, the main band that many knew Jeff as a musician from was Dry Cell, which was an American nu metal band formed in 1998 in California. They were known in earlier stages of the band as Impúr. They have had a steady line-up, having only one former member, that being Dave Wasierski. The consistent members have been Jeff Gutt, who joined the band in 2000, Danny Hartwell, Judd Gruenbaum, and Brandon Brown. As of 2012, the band has released just one studio album, Disconnected, in 2002. Never made the top 10 billboards nor did he receive any nominations for any music awards as contract disputes hindered the bands progress.
Gutt, a single father with a son, took part in two separate seasons of the American reality television series The X Factor. In season 2 (2012), He was eliminated in "bootcamp". And in season 3 (2013), he has reached the Final 16 live shows in the "Over 25 " category, mentored by Kelly Rowland. He will be appearing in live show for the top 12 sing-off on October 29th, 2013. Hope you all tune and support him in his endeavors to reach stardom in the music business
DRY CELL years
Many know Jeff Gutt from his association with Dry Cell so this article will begin his music career with this band.
How the band originally formed:
Part of the band formed in 1998 when guitarist Danny Hartwell and drummer Brandon Brown met at the Ratt Show on the Sunset Strip, when Dan "Kassan" Hartwell, in his attempt to buy all of LA music, created "Beyond Control". Later met up with then-vocalist Judd Gruenbaum. The original name of the band was "Beyond Control".
How Jeff Gutt became part of the Dry Cell band:
After forming, the band paid for the attention of Warner Brothers' Jeff Blue, an A&R Executive responsible for discovering Linkin Park. He later signed the band to a development deal, and found a new lead singer for the band in Jeff Gutt from Detroit. After being signed to Warner Bros. Records, the band went to work recording their debut album titled Disconnected. The 12-track album was due to be released on July 16, 2002. It was later pushed back to August 27, 2002. In the end, one of the band members' father got into a heated argument with Blue regarding the size of the band's promotion budget, the result of months of behind-the-scenes disagreement. Within 48 hours the father took his complaints to Warner, and two days later they released Dry Cell from their contract. The only place Disconnected was ever sold at (albeit in limited quantities) was during the Locobazooka Festival in 2002. These were the final Warner pressed copies complete with artwork. However, advanced copies of the album which come in a paper sleeve cover and contain different artwork, can be found more regularly. However, one song from the album, "Body Crumbles", could be found in other places, such as; the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, as part of the Madden NFL 2003 soundtrack and on the Hard Mix 2002 promo CD. That same year, the bands cover version of the Stone Temple Pilots song "Heaven & Hot Rods" was used on the NASCAR on Fox: Crank It Up soundtrack, as well, "Slip Away" appeared in EA Sports BIG franchise video game Freekstyle and the song "So Long Ago" is on the soundtrack for Warren Miller's Storm. The band always stated there was no chance of releasing the album, even if they were to sign a new record deal.
- In October, 2002, Dry Cell was featured in a New York Times article regarding their brief stint with Warner Bros.
- In March 2003, it was reported that a deal had signed with Epic Records. However, nothing ever became of this contract.
- In early 2004, Dave Wasierski was named as the band's new vocalist. At the time, it was reported that 8 new songs had been completed.
- But in 2005 vocalist Jeff Gutt re-joined the band, and they recorded four new demo tracks. The two songs released to the public were titled "New Revolution" and "The Lie". In late 2005, Danny Hartwell left the band. The group subsequently disbanded. After their split, two other tracks titled "Into Oblivion" and "Find a Way" were made available for download via their MySpace page.
- On December 15, 2009, Dry Cell announced through a comment left on their MySpace, that they released two full length records on iTunes, saying that one was of old songs (assumed to be Disconnected), and one was of new songs. But the songs were not found on iTunes for several days. A few days later, the Disconnected album (advance version) appeared on iTunes, with alternate cover art.
- Later in January 2010, the second album appeared on iTunes with the title The Dry Cell Collection, which included mostly previously released material and several more. Four songs on the record had been on the band's MySpace months before the release. It was also announced on Gutt's official website that Dry Cell was now defunct.
Gutt’s time with other bands time with Acrylic, Band With No Name and Punch:
After parting ways with Dry Cell in 2004, Gutt recorded 8 demo songs with a band called Acrylic. In 2005 (when Dry Cell went on hiatus) Gutt and Pittel formed Band With No Name (abbreviated as BWNN). In 2007, the band released a 5-track self-titled EP. In 2009 a full-length album named Humanity was released. (Now here is Jeff’s music that I love so much such as his song “Stay”). Gutt since his last season appearance on X-Factor performed gigs live with a local Detroit-based cover band, Punch. This band also features Gutt's fellow BWNN member Gary Pittel on guitars.
Writer of this article comments on music business world:
I learned more about the music world by watching the TLC story that recently aired on national TV. The greed and cost of being in this business is huge and many do not make it. All because of mismanagement not high living as many of the public think. We see records sold and concerts sold out and think they are rolling in the dollars when it’s a totally different picture which is such a shame for we miss out on some truly talented entertainment. The percentages taken by all involved and cost of production leaves many in the business in the bankrupt arena. You know the business and be smart to get the right management to represent you as a performer. It takes major financial backing to make it. That is why the shows like X-Factor, the Voice and American Idol are so important to these contestants.
A few pieces of charity work that Jeff Gutt has been a part of:
Many celebrities have done gigs to support charities but here is a very talented young man by the name of Jeffrey Adam Gutt (Jeff Gutt from the X-Factor) who has not made it to the big celebrity status YET but that is his dream. He did a concert in which all proceeds & donations were used to provide infant warmers in the Special Care Nursery at Port Huron Hospital. This not the only charity that Jeff Gutt has reached out to help with within this year as he did a gig to help with Covenant House with the Calling All Angels to get homeless children off the streets of Detroit Michigan. This is an extremely talent humble young man that is using his talents to reach out to children. Then Jeff reached out to a disabled young man in a special way to celebrate his 35th birthday. This birthday is so special as the young man was not supposed to have lived this long according to the experts. We had a birthday party for a boy (man) with Downs Syndrome..when he was born doctors told his parents he wouldn't live past 2 weeks.. He has now celebrated 35 birthdays with this one being a Red Carpet Event theme. Johnny thought he is celebrity after winning 1st place to a Hairy Chest contest on a cruise ship. So the idea of a Red Carpet theme came to mind, working everything together to make it a special night that everyone would remember. His parents got in touch with a what they called an AMAZING band called Punch with lead singer Jeffery Adam Gutt from the X-Factor...”that just made our party that more special with some great talent.. A memory that will last a lifetime cuz Johnny loves Rockstars!!!” .

Jeff has shown over again many times how caring he is at this level of his career. I wonder what the world has in store for itself as Jeff climbs upward in his way to stardom. Jeff is a very special man who is using his talents to give to others that have needs. I will be watching and listening for the times and dates for the charity gigs he does in the future and if you can reach within yourself and join me and help him donate to these worthy causes it would be appreciate. See his postings for charity gigs to come as I know we will hear more along these lines from Jeff. It just seems to be a part of him. He has told us he barely scrapes by to make a living for him and his son but he still finds it within himself to donate to others in need. I applaud him.
End results:
A lot of gigs and two true albums as the 2nd Disconnected was an extension of 1st and not a whole lot to show for it. Found no info for labels during his time with bands Acrylic, BWNN, or Punch. Nor was there any mention of billboard charting in top 10 at any time during his career. And no nominations for VMAs, AMAs, CMAs, IMAs, or IDMAs as there have been no nominations of any kind. He had brief fan acknowledgment during his stint with Dry Cell as a nu metal band but it went nowhere. Nor will you will not find info where the bands he performed with sold records or albums that made platinum or gold standings as sells never gelled for him through any contracts signed. Jeff has stated that in the music business there are so many restrictions when under a label that artistic creativity is lost when management is all about greed. Greed in the business is huge and financial backing in the right way gets lost. And the independent label is a hard road to handle in the music business. He is still seeking stardom and his dream because it never quite got there and he needs the financial backing to make it happen. This is what he is seeking on the X-Factor. What I like about Jeff is he is open about his background and blunt about what occurred through the years and now he is reaching out for help as he has tried it on his own. This is what many on this show that have backgrounds in music are here for but for some reason they are not being opened about it. I plan to back someone who is upfront about himself and what he is trying to head for in his career.

Jeff Gutt performed on last season X-Factor and sang “Hallelujah” and “If I Die Young”. Simon Cowell made decision to let Jeff go before show went to live votes and had stated that it was a mistake that he truly regretted. Well, Jeff is back this season trying again. He has sung “Creep” and “Amazing Grace” so far this season. His renditions of “Hallelujah” and “Amazing Grace” were awe inspiring due to the raw emotions that came across with his vocals. Jeff has told us on national TV that he has been playing most of his life. He has never withheld his career from us. He never stood before us and stated that he “sort of knows the business” nor has he stated that he wanted to revisit his dream. He can’t revisit something that he never achieve yet. A lot of ups and downs have occurred in his career but he is still at it trying to make it happen. He has almost gotten there but not quite fully had it in his grasp due to circumstances beyond his control at the time. He has learned lessons along the way and is going at this in a different way this time around. I plan to back him on this journey to stardom. Hope that you all will join him along with me in watching him achieve that dream. Any that wish to know about his career may visit his website and see what he has done. In fact, he welcomes you to check up on him.

How the Dream Became Derailed for Jeff Gutt As a Member of a Young Band - Dry Cell
Article was written by LAURA M. HOLSON Published: October 01, 2002 from the New York Times (NYTimes.com) that the following information has come from which tells the story behind how Jeff Gutt, a contestant of X-Factor 2013 season 3, never saw his dream gel. To back information written are articles from Candgnews.com, Letrasya.com & Tusletras.com. Click on the links provided to read the story of Jeff’s journey in the his music career and then its derailment of stardom. Read how his association with Linkin Park came with betrayal of the worst kind between bands, managers & producers. Many have made requests of wanting Jeff to sing something by Linkin Park and after I read about what has occurred in Jeff’s career dealing with members of that band along with their manager I cannot see him wanting to promote their music any time soon if ever. (just my opinion) When the debut of Dry Cell’s material was derailed in the manner that it was reporters asked Jeff if he was going to go home: “Mr. Gutt, at 26 the oldest of the group, said he had no plans to return to Detroit, hopeful the album will still be released by someone and become a success.” Quote from Jeff:
''In the end, if we have a hit record,'' he said recently, ''does any of this matter?''
Linkin Park was the instrument of death to Jeff’s dream because it ended up being an either/or situation between label backing Dry Cell or Linkin Park due to budget cuts within the publishing company.
Statement from Jeff’s dad about Jeff’s career: Greg Gutt: Dry Cells album, Disconnected, was never released. Fans bought the CD when Dry Cell was on the Locoballooza Tour of 2002 with Seven Dust, Mushroom Head, and a lot of other bands. One fan actually paid $250 for an original Disconnected CD that was never opened. People in the Detroit area will be surprised to know that Dry Cell was featured on the Red Wings DVD after they won the Stanley Cup in 2002. Jeff sang the opening song of the DVD with one of the songs from Disconnected. Also, Dry Cells video of Body Crumbles was featured at the end of the DVD. A collector’s item for sure! Warner Bros Records did release Disconnected in Japan featuring an additional song called I Confide as the Japanese always want an extra something other than the USA Version. No .... Dry Cell does not get any royalties from the Japan sales thereby relegating Jeff as still being Amateur status. One song, Body Crumbles, was used on the soundtrack for a warner Bros regaled movie called Queen of the Damned. Every member of every band on that soundtrack received a Gold Record for their contribution. If you ever get a chance to watch Queen of the Damned, you can hear Jeff singing for about 6 seconds after the girls dream part in the movie as background music playing as if MTV was on her TV.

Jeff and his son:
Well we all know that Jeff did return home and the reason why was he found out he was a father. The moment he found out that he had missed out on knowing ahead of time that he was to become a father, missed his son’s birth and the first several months of his son’s life Jeff left to go home to be around his son, Talon. Many in his place in life would have supplied support and just went on to try at having their stardom in the music biz but not Jeff. He dropped what he was doing and made his way home so that he could be more than a father as he wanted to be a dad. To Jeff being a dad meant hands on caring for his son not just child support. To be a dad he would need to be there physically for his son. Many see being a parent as a duty but Jeff sees it as a privilege. This is why Jeff makes the statements that he does on the X-Factor 2013. Some have called his statements about his son as using the “sob story” card. Jeff does not see being a single dad as a “sob story” in any way.
One fan has made the comment that explains Jeff’s remarks quite well: “Bob Smith: Jeff didn't say pick me because I have a kid. He said there is a five year old kid out there (In the stands) and I will do anything not to let him down. Meaning he will work hard and give 100%. He has been working towards his dream of making it in the music industry since about the age of 7. That is 30 years, if that's not paying your dues then someone please tell me what is?” well stated Bob.
Statement from Jeff’s dad about Jeff and his son, Talon: Greg Gutt: Jeff's journey has indeed been full of ups and downs. Actually, more downs than ups. If his fans ever knew how close Jeff has been to "making it" to the grand stage only to be dropped in the dust to be forgotten ... they would utterly be shocked! What is shown about the relationship with his son, Talon, is only a fraction of Jeff's story! I have often said that I am prouder of Jeff's ability to get back up after being knocked down than how awesome his talent is. When I read comments online about how" Jeff should try this, sing that, go on this show, sing this style, go on tour, make a record, write a song ..... And on and on and on .... I just shake my head and smile about how close Jeff has been so many times in his life to doing just that! But ..... it's not my story to tell!
Final comment from author of this article:
Dream of stardom de-railed, betrayal in the music biz world and taking steps to be a dad rather than just a father put a hold on Jeff’s dream to be a rock star. But all this stated it is just a hold as Jeff is on X-Factor 2013 to keep his dream alive. It will take our votes to help this young man realize his dream. If you believe he is the best & deserves your backing then come out & vote him onward to that dream. I believe in him & will be voting. How about you?
